Your New Fall Image: 5 Ways to Refine It

By Rachel Wagner
From The Savvy Professional, September 2010

No matter whom you are or what you do, the way you dress and present yourself has a key impact on your success.

In fact, when you walk into a room, it only takes 60 seconds for someone to form an impression of you based on your clothing and mannerisms.

Here are 5 easy but powerful ways you can propel your professional image.

1. Consider your work wardrobe.

Does it communicate your personal and professional best? Men should replace dress shirts that show wear on cuffs and collars. Invest in flat-front rather than pleated trousers. They are more stylish and give you a leaner silhouette no matter your size. Take a look at your navy blazer, a wardrobe staple. Maybe it's time to invest in a new one that's smartly cut and looks fresh.

Women should discard knits that are pilled or items that don't fit properly. Buy one or two stand-out items—perhaps a cashmere sweater—that has timeless appeal and reflects quality and sophistication. Buy what's best for your body, not what's best on the model. Also, buy something you love, like those leopard print pumps you've been eyeing!

2. Choose quality accessories.

Anchor your outfit with the best quality shoes you can afford (Nordstrom Rack, anyone?). And, if your eyeglass frames are more than 3-4 years old, consider updating them.

Business accessories give an impression about you, too. When meeting a client, carry papers in a smart leather portfolio and your laptop or iPad in a bag that's as clean as the rest of your look. Both men and women should carry a classy business card case. Choose one in leather or a metal one monogrammed with your initials. A quality pen adds refinement.

3. Update your hairstyle.

In a rut? Ask your hairdresser to tweak your cut or color for a new you. Men should get a neck shave in between haircuts to stay well groomed.

4. Posture counts.

Look at your posture in the mirror. Good posture not only makes you look competent, but it can make you look 10 pounds lighter!

5. Avoid annoying mannerisms.

Chewing gum can damage initial impressions very quickly. In a meeting or conversation, avoid drumming your fingers, jiggling your knee, constantly interrupting, talking too much, or not making direct eye contact. These mannerisms can make even a very competent person seem less capable.

Take a few moments to evaluate your image this week. Make sure that 60-second impression is one that promotes your effectiveness and credibility with other people.
